The Universe as a Holographic Projection

Posted on Mar 29th, 2006 by Kalyan : New Dimension Kalyan

Scientists and researchers the world over have discovered enough evidence to suggest that the universe is a hologram.

Now before we further delve into the holographic concept, let us digress to first understand what a hologram is. A hologram is a 3D photograph made with the aid of a laser. Actually, the object to be photographed is first immersed in the light of a laser beam. A second laser beam is rebounded off the reflected light of the first. This results in an interference pattern which is captured on film. When developed, the film produces a meaningless criss-cross of light and dark lines. However, if the developed film is illuminated by another laser beam, a three-dimensional image of the original object appears.

Unlike normal photographs, a remarkable feature of holograms is that however much you cut and divide the holographic film, every clip of film contains the intact version of the original image, albeit a smaller one. Every part of a hologram contains all the information possessed by the whole!! Thus, if we try to take apart something constructed holographically, instead of getting the pieces of which it is made, we will only get the smaller wholes.

Now let us come to the part at to why we are forced to consider the universe as a holographic projection of some deeper reality. Alain Aspect, a research physicist at the University of Paris, and his team conducted an experiment which led to the discovery that subatomic particles such as electrons can instantaneously communicate with each other regardless of the distance separating them. This contradicts the Theory of Relativity's postulation that nothing can travel at speeds faster than light. However, the two electrons that are a billion light years apart can still communicate instantaneously.

I would like to stress here the fact that at sub-atomic levels, matter ceases to exist. What do exist are resonance points of two or more vibrations. This means that electrons are no more matter but mere points where resonance of several frequencies. This stems in part from the fact that electrons exhibit properties of both wave and particle, amply demonstrated by Young's Double Slit experiment.

So can we safely conclude that objective reality does not exist? And that at a deeper level the Universe is an apparition, in spite of the apparent solidity? On the basis of this conclusion we can say that the separateness of the electrons in the experiment and, thus, our individual separateness is merely an illusion. This is what the ancient Hindu Seers called Maya. The Universe is a projection of some fundamental reality - a holographic projection, to be precise.

All that we can, at present, do is to visualize this concept. We are helpless otherwise. Let me present an illustration used by none other than David Bohm, the University of London physicist to help us better visualize this startling concept.

Consider a fish in an aquarium. Also, let us assume that we are unable to see this aquarium directly. Our knowledge about this is acquired by what is shown on four screens by four cameras positioned at four different angles. The images shown on screen are thus different. Now as we continue to observe we become aware of simultaneous movements of the different images, as if a relationship exists between them. We can, thus, erroneously conclude that some sort of instantaneous communication exists between the four images. When actually they are the one and the same!!

This is exactly the scenario at the sub-atomic level. Fundamentally, and at a deeper level we are all one and the same. There is no separateness - you and I are one - ultimately as indivisible as a holographic image!!

In this holographic projection of the Universe, even space and time cease to exist separately. The past, present and future are rolled into the eternal NOW. The Brahmanic concept of ‘This Is All That Is' could never have been more true!

Well, how would you test that, in a way that would be useful to the average person?

What kind of thought experiment can you imagine that would attempt to demonstrate it?

Thought can never lead to awareness. One needs to go beyond thought to realize the true nature of the universe. Science can only help us speculate, mathematically or otherwise. With thought we can use our imagination to visualize concepts, yet the truth would be a little beyond our grasp.

The holographic projection helps to solve many riddles of life that are considered to be paranormal, such as telepathic commuication, existence of higher dimensional beings, channeling and so on.

The technique of Distant Healing using Pranic energy can demonstrate this concept. A person residing very far away can be healed by the Pranic Healer. The effects are instantaneous and the patient can actually feel the change in energy of his system.

However, do share with us your way of testing this.

I haven’t been able to think of a way to test it. Nor has anyone else that I’m aware of.

This idea has been in the literature for over thirty years now, but it remains a curiousity, because no-one, to my knowledge, has been able to either test for it with the massively expensive physics tools we have available, or even to invent a thought experiment.

The holographic universe idea has often been compared to Indra’s Net, made of jewels and so cunningly designed that each jewel reflects every other jewel in the net. But, while it’s poetically beautiful to find a comparison between one of the many unproven theories of physics and the images and ideas of the ancient books, it doesn’t tell us much.

I can tell you are earnestly thinking about this material, and that’s a good thing. But it’s not realistic to compare well known physics experiments with stories of channeling and distant healing.

I’m just inviting you to take your thoughts to the next level. In the same way that Einstein used a constant series of thought experiments to figure out how to model his ideas, if the idea of a holographic universe has any validity, it should be possible to think of ways it would have to behave, then look for real, hard, undeniable data that tests the theory you come up with.

Oh yeah, I wanted to add, using this material as imagery in teaching stories and art is another matter entirely.

This is such a great idea… one of my favorites, in fact! It seems a good time to mention one of my favorite books of all time is

Talbot begins his book with an excellent introduction to physicist David Bohm’s concept of the holographic model of the universe, and combines the physics model with Karl Pribram’s work on the holographic model of the brain. The result is a marvelous description of a non-local, interconnected and alive universe that moves in response to our every thought and feeling. I’ve long been impressed with the clarity with which Talbot presents the concept of a holographic universe and how various paranormal phenomenon can be explained within that model. Even some of the really strange phenomenons… such as out of body experiences (OBEs), near death experiences (NDEs), auric readings, psychokinesis, acupuncture, X-ray vision, healing, and psychic readings are all described and considered for placement into the holographic model.

So, do you actually mean to say that the universe is a 'holographic projection'?

Or, do you mean the universe acts like it has a 'holographic structure'?

The two things have different implications.  The universe could have a holographic structure without being a projection.

A 'projection' implies a 'projector' - a thought in the mind of god, the universe as a dream of a sleeping god kind of thing.

I've been listening to Ken Wilber on Integral Naked of late and reading his book Quantum Questions, a collection of mystical writings from the premier physicists, Einstein, Shroedinger, Eddington, and the like. Wilber does not believe science can prove the mystical or that it should be used to do so. He holds up these spiritual writings as testiments of faith despite the inability of the material to prove the ethereal. I know too little about physics to understand all the ins and outs, but I do hear Ken's voice as unique and well-informed.

Interesting.

Hi Bill,

The Universe may have a holographic structure as a result of the thought projection in the mind of God. All this is Maya - an illusion. So too the other parallel universes. Every universe is a result of thought. But these may be mere philosophical musings or scientific speculations. We do not know till we know. But the mind with its obvious limitations cannot know. To know we need to transcend mind. And we can transcend mind by first stopping the flow of thoughts. And then connecting to the source.

Indeed. Connecting to the source is key. Big technical jargon won’t take us there. Only, as you say, stopping the flow of thoughts or letting the mind go can accomplish it.

Nice input Kalyan.
